COASTAL RIVERS

Coastal Rivers

LITTER FREE WATERWAYS

Coastal Rivers is a Mississippi non-profit corporation formed in July of 2008 to reduce the amount of marine litter and debris in the waterways of coastal Mississippi. We plan to do this in several ways.

Litter removal

1.      Picking up litter from the rivers and marshes several times a month

2.     Participating in organized clean- ups such as The Mississippi Coastal Clean-up and Renew our Rivers clean-up

3.     Organizing and participating in smaller local clean-ups several times a year.

          Litter prevention

1.      Develop an education program to show both the negative impact marine litter has on our environment and ways to reduce it, then present the program to schools, scouting groups and civic clubs.

2.     Promote recycling and on land litter prevention programs.

           Appliance pick up and disposal

1.      Develop and implement an appliance pickup on demand program where owners of camps and houseboats can call for the pick up and disposal of white goods to prevent the dumping of appliances.

Coastal Rivers is currently operating with one donated pontoon boat and volunteers with their own boats. We plan to add at least two more boats and a small barge as resources allow.

We will currently focus our efforts in the Pascagoula River, but plan to expand to the other coastal counties as funding and manpower allow.
